Shiraishiodori is a traditional Bon-dance that has been passed down through generations on Shiraishi Island, located in the Kasaoka Islands of Okayama Prefecture.
It was listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022. Shiraishiodori is originated in 1183 to mourn the victims of the Gempei War, and it has a history over 800 years. It is dynamic and graceful, yet also has a sense of sorrow since it is a memorial dance. Currently, 13 different dances have been passed down, and each one of them comes with a unique costume. In addition, each choreography is performed to accompany by a single lead.
Dancing on the beach with the sunset in the background is particularly stunning, and every year, many photographers join the tour to capture the moment.
The tour begins with a sightseeing around the island, followed by a performance of professionals dancing, on white sandy beach at sunset.
Then everyone practices dancing in a circle, and the tour concludes with a group dance.
